Rigid box manufacturing: materials, printing and finishing

From rigid grayboard and specialty papers to CMYK, Pantone, hot foil and soft-touch finishing — every step of your custom rigid box is produced under one roof.

BoxSourcing runs an integrated production workflow for custom rigid boxes: structural design, prepress, printing, lamination, foil and embossing, die-cutting, paper-wrapping and final assembly. Keeping these steps together shortens lead time, keeps colour consistent from proof to production and lets us fix problems on the line instead of across suppliers.

Below is a practical overview of the materials, machinery and processes behind our boxes, how each one affects the result, and how we check quality before goods ship. If you need a technique that is not listed, ask — we regularly develop custom finishes with specialist partners.

Materials

  • Rigid grayboard, 1.2–2.5 mm, thickness set per wall
  • Coated art paper for sharp CMYK and Pantone colour
  • Specialty and textured papers — linen, leatherette, felt-touch, pearlescent
  • Kraft and eco liners for natural, recyclable designs
  • Fabric, velvet and satin wraps for jewelry and gift sets
  • FSC-certified board and paper on request

Printing

  • Sheet-fed offset CMYK printing
  • Pantone (PMS) solid-colour matching and metallic inks
  • Digital printing for proofs and short runs
  • Variable data, QR codes and barcodes
  • Screen printing for opaque whites and raised effects

Surface finishing

  • Hot foil stamping — gold, silver, rose gold, holographic
  • Spot UV and raised (3D) UV
  • Embossing, debossing and multi-level sculpted embossing
  • Soft-touch, matte, gloss and anti-scratch lamination
  • Magnetic closures, ribbon pulls and custom inserts

Production equipment and technology

A modern line for every stage of the box — from CAD sampling to automatic box forming.

StageEquipment and technologyWhat it means for you
Structural design and samplingCAD structural design and digital cutting-table samplingYour dieline is validated on a physical white sample before any artwork is printed.
Prepress and colourDigital colour proofing with spectrophotometer-based colour management; CTP plate-makingPantone and brand colours are matched to your reference before the press runs.
PrintingMulti-colour sheet-fed offset presses; digital press for proofs and short runsSharp, consistent colour on coated and specialty papers, and economical small runs.
Lamination and coatingAutomatic thermal film laminating; water-based varnish and UV coatingMatte, gloss, soft-touch and anti-scratch surfaces applied evenly across full sheets.
Foil, emboss and spot UVAutomatic hot-foil stamping and embossing presses; spot and raised UV coatingCrisp foil edges and accurate registration, with controlled emboss depth.
Die-cutting and groovingAutomatic die-cutting machines and V-grooving equipment for grayboardAccurate, repeatable board dimensions and clean, sharp corners on every wall.
Box formingAutomatic paper-wrapping and rigid box forming lines, plus skilled hand-finishing for complex structuresConsistent wrap tension and glue coverage at volume, with hand-finishing where structure demands it.
Inserts and closuresDie-cut and CNC-cut EVA, foam and molded-pulp inserts; precise magnet placementA snug fit for glass, bottles and jewelry, and a magnetic closure that aligns cleanly.

Signature finishing techniques

The finishes our customers request most — and how to use them well.

Hot foil stamping

Metallic gold, silver, rose gold or holographic foil pressed into the surface. Ideal for logos, borders and product names; keep line weights above about 0.3 mm for crisp results.

Embossing and debossing

A raised or recessed logo that adds tactile depth with no extra ink. Single-level or multi-level sculpted embossing; it pairs especially well with foil.

Spot UV and raised UV

A glossy coating applied to selected areas for contrast against a matte box. Raised (3D) UV adds a noticeable relief for patterns and brand marks.

Soft-touch lamination

A velvety, matte surface that feels premium in the hand. On very dark solid colours ask for an anti-scratch option and compare on a physical sample.

Digital printing and variable data

Short runs, colour proofs, personalised names, serial numbers and QR codes — without the cost of extra plates.

Engineered inserts and magnets

EVA, foam, pulp or paperboard inserts cut to your product, and concealed magnets for a satisfying, aligned magnetic close.

Quality control at every checkpoint

We check against the sample you approved, not against a description.

  1. 01

    Incoming materials

Board thickness, paper weight and colour of every incoming batch are checked against the order specification.

  2. 02

    Prepress approval

The digital proof and your signed-off physical sample become the reference standard for the whole run.

  3. 03

    In-process checks

Operators check colour, foil registration, lamination adhesion and die-cut dimensions at each station, with first-piece approval before every stage.

  4. 04

    Final inspection

Finished boxes are inspected against the approved sample — size, colour, finish, glue, corners and magnet function — using an AQL-based sampling plan.

  5. 05

    Packing and documentation

Cartons are packed to prevent crushing and scuffing in transit. Photos and inspection results are shared on request before shipment.
